How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Print NMFC 140800 and Class 55 on the BOL, and note packaging as boxes, crates, or drums with clear piece counts and both net and gross weights.
  2. Palletize heavy ingots flat, interleave layers, and block and band to the pallet; keep all pieces inside the pallet footprint to prevent edge damage.
  3. For crates or boxes, add internal dunnage or hardwood blocking to stop shifting; mark handling sides and center of gravity for forklift operators.
  4. If shipping drums, lock ring closures and use moisture barriers; request liftgate or forklift at pickup and delivery if no dock is available.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 55 means predictable LTL quotes and fewer reclass fees for dense, solid-metal shipments.
  • Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies carrier selection and scheduling.
  • Standardized packaging (boxes, crates, drums) streamlines handling and reduces claim risk through better unitization.
  • Low freight class on compact alloy ingots helps secure competitive per‑pound rates on multi-stop or recurring moves.
