How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship flat on full-coverage pallets or in wood crates with no overhang; add interleaving paper or film and wrap to minimize scratching and tarnish.
- Protect edges with heavy angle guards and band using corner protectors; note piece count, alloy name (nickel-silver/German silver), dimensions, and gauge on the BOL.
- Limit stack height for thin sheets to prevent bowing; place three or more runners and block/braced sides to resist shear during LTL cross-docking.
- Mark freight as plate/sheet (not coil), include skid weight and overall dims, and request upright handling to avoid bends in longer strips.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Damage prevention on edges and finishes cuts claim risk and keeps downstream polishing or stamping operations on schedule.
- Clear NMFC 140840 identification reduces reclass inspections and surprise rate changes, stabilizing landed cost.
- Well-skidded flats cube efficiently for LTL consolidation, improving cost per pound and reducing handling touches.
- Non-hazardous alloy status streamlines tendering and avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork delays.
