How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify the exact nut type and form on the BOL (e.g., “Edible nuts, almonds, shelled, 50 lb bags on 40x48 pallet”) to align with the NMFC Edible Nuts Group entry when an exact item number isn’t provided.
- Use food‑grade packaging and moisture barriers: poly-lined bags or double-walled cartons, stretch wrap with top sheets, and corner boards. Avoid pallet overhang to prevent crushing.
- Protect flavor and oil quality: keep away from heat and strong odors, add desiccant packs in humid seasons, and request clean, odor-free trailers to reduce contamination risks.
- Document lot numbers and allergen statements on labels and packing lists; apply tamper-evident seals and photograph the loaded pallets to streamline claims handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear, detailed commodity descriptions reduce reclass and reweigh disputes, protecting margins and keeping LTL invoices predictable.
- Robust packaging and pallet standards cut damage from moisture and stack pressure, lowering claim frequency and cycle time.
- Non-hazardous designation simplifies carrier selection and avoids hazmat fees, improving overall freight rate competitiveness.
- Consistent labeling and traceability (lots, allergens) speed dock checks and prevent refusals, reducing detention and rescheduling costs.
