How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density before tendering: weigh the full shipment (including pallet) and measure the cube to set class by PCF. Example: 1,200 lb on 48x40x48 in ≈ 18.8 PCF.
- Match packaging to the nut form: use drums or tight-lined boxes for nutmeats or pecan meal to prevent oil wicking; sturdy boxes or bags with slip sheets for in-shell nuts.
- Control moisture and crushing: add desiccants for chestnuts and peanuts, avoid pallet overhang, and strap or net to keep bags from bulging or tearing in transit.
- Label clearly for food handling: note the specific nut (e.g., black walnuts, pecans) and NMFC 141770 on the BOL, and mark Keep Dry to guide terminal handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density entry minimizes reweigh and reclass fees, stabilizing LTL quotes and protecting margin on seasonal nut shipments.
- Right packaging (lined boxes or drums) cuts oil-seepage damage and contamination claims for nutmeats and pecan meal.
- Optimized cube and stackability with boxes or drums improves trailer utilization and can unlock lower freight rates.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and speeds bookings during peak harvest and holiday demand.
