How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify inert status before booking: document that the projectiles or rocket heads are empty, sand-loaded, or solid practice units with no energetic components.
- Package to prevent movement: use blocked wooden crates or tight palletization with chocks, foam, and edge protectors; band with steel or heavy polyester straps and add corner guards.
- Mark and declare clearly: label as “Inert Training Projectile” per carrier policy, note hazmat handling, and include emergency contact details on the BOL.
- Quote accurately: declare NMFC 14250, Class 85, list piece count and total weight, and confirm your carrier accepts non-explosive ammunition items.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 rating delivers predictable LTL pricing and reduces reclass disputes.
- Clear inert designation and proper blocking/bracing lower damage risk and claim costs.
- Accurate NMFC identification speeds carrier approval for munitions-related freight and avoids compliance delays.
- Optimized pallet builds (dense metal items, stable stacks) improve cube use and minimize handling fees.
