How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect machined faces, threads, and ports with caps or thread guards, then wrap each shell/base in corrugated or foam to prevent metal-on-metal scuffing.
- Use sturdy boxes or crates with internal blocking and dividers; for bulk small bases, line drums and separate layers with fiberboard to stop abrasion.
- Palletize cartons securely: keep all packages within the 48x40 footprint, add corner posts, band and stretch-wrap, and label stackable or do-not-stack as needed.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Oil or Fuel Filter Shells or Bases, NMFC 142560, Class 70–85, non-hazardous,” include piece counts/part numbers, and photo the pack-out for claim defense.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Control LTL costs with a defined Class 70–85 range and improve rates by shipping in stackable, palletized units.
- Reduce reclass and reweigh fees by matching the NMFC description and approved packaging (boxes, crates, drums, or secured to pallets).
- Lower damage claims by protecting threads and sealing surfaces, keeping production or service lines supplied without delays.
- Speed dock handling with uniform cartons/crates, minimizing accessorials tied to special handling or loose freight.
