How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect the connection: install thread protectors on every adapter, apply a light rust inhibitor, and bag each piece so metal faces never touch.
- Build secure packs for LTL: set adapters in V-blocks or saddles, add cardboard or wood separators, then band tightly to a skid or crate with edge guards.
- Bill correctly: list “Adapters, casing — NMFC 142730, Class 85, non-hazardous” on the BOL; include piece count and skid/crate notes since density isn’t required.
- Match mode to size: small runs ride on 48×40 pallets; longer or heavier units may need extended skids or partial flatbed with blocking and a stated strap count.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 eliminates density reclass risk, producing faster quotes and fewer inspection delays.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat handling fees and paperwork.
- Proper thread protection cuts damage claims and rework, keeping adapters field-ready and reducing downtime.
- Standard palletization enables cost-effective LTL for small batches versus pricier dedicated flatbed moves.
