How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm construction and size before quoting—plastic vs metal and whether wheels ship assembled or nested can shift class within the 100–200 range.
- Select packaging by risk profile: small plastic wheels in boxes with dividers; larger or metal wheels in wood crates with blocking to immobilize hubs and axles.
- Measure diameter × depth × any bracket overhang for accurate dimensions, and note if cartons are stackable or require corner posts to protect round rims.
- Bundle multiples with protective sleeves to prevent scuffs; example: nest ten 24-inch plastic wheels per carton with corrugated rings and foam around the bearing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct use of NMFC 14340 minimizes reclass fees and keeps LTL invoices predictable across different wheel materials and pack styles.
- Right-size packing—boxing for light plastics, crating for oversized metal—reduces damage claims and returns, lowering total landed cost.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, improving transit reliability during seasonal pet retail or lab supply surges.
- Consistent coding for both pet-store and research shipments streamlines routing guides and accelerates quote turnaround for repeat orders.
