How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote as NMFC 143870, Class 77.5 and note “in packages” (e.g., 10 rods per bundle on skids, 12 ft length) to match the tariff language.
- Protect finishes: use VCI wrap or poly sleeves, thread protectors, and plastic end caps so polished surfaces and rod ends don’t abrade in transit.
- Bundle to prevent rolling: crib with wood dunnage, add chocks, and apply steel or heavy polyester banding with corner guards; mark center of gravity.
- Load straight with no overhang; use spread forks or slings at balance points, and list actual weight and piece count per bundle on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 simplifies LTL pricing and reduces reclass disputes, keeping invoices clean and predictable.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges for lower all‑in freight costs.
- Packaging as tight bundles on skids minimizes damage to polished surfaces, cutting OS&D claims and project delays at the well site.
- Clear item description and package counts speed up quoting and tendering, shortening lead time for rig maintenance or workover schedules.
