How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your carrier accepts live animals and book the fastest route. Declare NMFC 14390, Class 300 on the BOL and request minimal cross-docking or direct linehaul when available.
- Use rigid boxes/cages/crates with venting on multiple sides, secure latches, and chew‑resistant mesh. Add absorbent bedding and a spill‑proof water source, then band the crate to a pallet for stability.
- Label clearly on all sides: LIVE ANIMALS, orientation arrows, and species/handling notes. Include a weather-resistant pouch with care instructions and emergency contacts.
- Plan for temperature control and quick handoff. Avoid stacking, strap the pallet to prevent shifting, pre-alert the consignee for immediate receipt, and verify any state or USDA transport requirements.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate Class 300 designation reduces reclass fees and speeds rate quoting, preventing costly billing disputes.
- Proper crating and ventilation lower refusal risk and damage claims, protecting animal welfare and delivery timelines.
- Palletized cages enable safe forklift handling, cutting manual labor charges and reducing accessorials at pickup and delivery.
- Preplanned routing and clear labels shorten dwell time and limit detention, improving on‑time performance for farms, breeders, zoos, and sanctuaries.
