How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. State “NMFC 14400 – Class 300” on the BOL and clearly describe contents, e.g., “1 crate taxidermy specimens: animal head and bird mount.”
  2. Use double‑wall boxes or a braced wood crate; immobilize antlers, beaks, or fins with foam blocks and straps. Add vapor barrier wrap and desiccant to reduce moisture damage.
  3. Label “Taxidermy Specimens – Not For Food” and keep dry. Request liftgate and inside delivery for museums or galleries when needed.
  4. If species are regulated, include CITES/USFWS permits and photos of packing. Provide exact dimensions and weight for carrier capacity planning even though class is fixed.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate Class 300 classification avoids reclass fees and speeds up rating and quoting with carriers.
  • Robust crating minimizes vibration and puncture damage, reducing costly restoration or claim disputes on delicate mounts.
  • Packing multiple mounts in one crate can lower handling charges per piece and reduce accessorials from multiple pickups.
  • Complete wildlife documentation prevents customs holds and re-delivery charges, keeping exhibit timelines on track.
