How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item is a well point, strainer, or screen and ship in boxes or sturdy crates; this code is item-based, so density data isn’t required.
- Protect threads and slotted sections with caps and edge guards; for steel components, wrap with VCI or corrosion-inhibiting paper before boxing or crating.
- Brace long lengths (e.g., 8–10 ft screens) with internal blocking; add skid runners so forklifts don’t crush the package and mark lift points clearly.
- Document material and count on the BOL: “Well screens, boxed/crated, NMFC 144250, non-haz”; include photos for claim prevention and smooth inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Cuts reclass risk by using the correct item code, minimizing surprise charges and disputes.
- Crating and end protection reduce crush and thread damage, lowering replacement and claim costs.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering across oil, water, or gas projects.
- Predictable LTL rating improves quoting accuracy for field mobilizations and contractor bids.
