Notes
Note 144902: NOTE-The released value which shall be deemed to relate to each pound separately and not to the shipment as a whole, must be entered on shipping order and bill of lading as follows: "The agreed or declared value of the property is hereby specifically stated by the shipper to be not exceeding _______ per pound." ________________________________________ (Shipper's Signature) (Classes herein based on released value have been authorized by the Interstate Commerce Commission by Released Rates Order No. MC-342 of August 13, 1952.)
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the released value in writing on the BOL (e.g., “Released to $5.00 per lb”); if omitted, carriers may default to a higher rating.
- Use leakproof inner containers (glass or aluminum with tight caps), poly-bag each, add absorbent/cushioning, and place in a sturdy carton or fiber drum.
- Choose packaging by volume: small retail vials ship best in double-wall boxes; bulk concentrates belong in well-closed drums with secure ring locks.
- Describe clearly: “Essential oils, natural or artificial, NOI.” Include flash point info if known to avoid misclassification checks, even though this item is non-hazardous.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Released value control lets you balance liability coverage with lower LTL charges, aligning freight cost to your actual risk tolerance.
- Non-hazardous designation reduces accessorials and eliminates hazmat handling delays, improving network availability and transit times.
- Box or drum packing improves stackability and minimizes leakage claims, reducing reclasses, inspection fees, and service interruptions.
- Clear use of NMFC 144900 ensures predictable rating, fewer disputes, and faster audits, supporting accurate landed cost forecasting.
