How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your mix of items (paints, canvases, brushes, kits) fits non-hazardous formulations; route any flammable solvents under the correct hazmat NMFC instead.
- Match packaging to product: seal water-based paint sets in lined, partitioned cartons; protect stretched canvases with corner/edge guards and face sheets to prevent rub.
- Unitize small parts (beads, clasps, craft hardware) into sealed inner kits, then overbox and print piece counts on labels to cut OS&D disputes.
- Quote under NMFC 14520 as a group header and include a contents summary and photos; carriers may request an item-specific subclass before pickup.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single group header simplifies quoting across diverse art SKUs for retailers, schools, and makerspaces.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork.
- Damage-preventive pack-outs reduce claims on fragile canvases, molded clay, and brush sets, protecting margin and reputation.
- Kitting and master-cartoning shrink handling units, speed dock turns, and can lower LTL rates via better cube efficiency.
