Note 14536: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Determine class by density: weigh each box and calculate cubic feet (L×W×H ÷ 1728). Example: 24×18×12 in at 20 lb = 3.0 cu ft, 6.7 pcf.
- Pack liquids (ceramic glazes/stains) in sealed inner containers inside boxes or approved drums, add leakproof liners, and mark This Side Up.
- Keep unlike items in separate cartons when densities vary—light canvases vs. heavy glaze jars—to avoid reweigh/reclass and to preserve accurate ratings.
- Verify the correct sub-note when applicable: paints NOI see 14536; string/wire art kits 14537; picture/plaque kits 14538; mixed paint sets 14539.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize density to lower shipping class and reduce LTL freight spend without changing products—tight pack-outs and right-size cartons pay off.
- Clean documentation (NMFC 14535, weight per carton, cube) reduces carrier inspections, saving time and preventing costly reclass fees.
- Boxed format stacks efficiently on pallets, improving trailer utilization and reducing damage risk for canvases, panels, and kit components.
- Clear rules for liquids in inner containers or drums streamline compliance, speeding quotes and minimizing accessorial charges for leaks/spills.
