How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 145640, Armored Scout Cars, Class 150, Non-Hazardous on the BOL to prevent reclass and speed carrier acceptance.
- Secure all mounted gear and internal equipment so it cannot move—use factory tie-down points, chocks, straps, and lockable mounts where applicable.
- If loose tools or spares ship with the unit, place them in rugged boxes and band or bolt the boxes inside the vehicle compartment to meet the rule’s “properly secured” intent.
- Coordinate loading method in advance (roll-on, winch, or crane). Confirm overall dimensions and weight, including turrets or racks, so the carrier brings the right equipment and securement.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 rating eliminates density disputes, producing faster quotes and fewer reweigh/reclass fees.
- Non-hazardous status (when free of hazmat materials) avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies paperwork.
- Ability to include boxed gear with the vehicle reduces separate freight lines, limits loss risk, and streamlines receiving.
- Clear Ordnance Group classification signals specialized handling needs, improving carrier routing and reducing damage claims.
