Notes
Note 145782: NOTE-Also applies on necessary equipment of fuzes, fuze brackets and wiring assemblies, when such articles are shipped inside containers with bomb fin assemblies.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pick the right pack: use heavy boxes for small fins and skidded crates for longer vanes to protect trailing edges (e.g., a 36" aluminum fin in a foam-lined crate with tip guards).
- Immobilize each assembly with blocking and bracing. Add edge guards and V-boards so straps never contact thin airfoils; use rust inhibitor wraps for metal and soft bagging for composites.
- Document precisely on the BOL: “NMFC 145780 Bomb/Rocket Fin Assemblies — see Note item 145782.” Mark “Inert Component—No Explosives” to avoid screening delays.
- Palletize within the footprint, avoiding overhang. Use orientation arrows and, if needed, “Do Not Stack” cones to prevent bending or crush damage to delicate fins.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with fixed Class 77.5—reduces reclass disputes and audit charges for ordnance components.
- Non-hazardous status means no hazmat surcharges and a wider carrier pool, streamlining tendering and transit planning.
- Flexible packaging (boxes or crates) lets you balance material spend against damage risk, cutting claims and reship costs.
- One NMFC for bomb and rocket fin assemblies simplifies consolidation, WMS setup, and billing under a single freight category.
