How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Document as “Empty firearm/bayonet storage locker” on the BOL with NMFC 145950, Class 150. List piece count, pallet count, and note “no top stack” for sheet-metal units.
- Secure the locker doors shut and use tamper-evident seals. Remove loose shelves or hardware and pack them inside with padding to prevent rattling or abrasion.
- For steel lockers, add corner guards and foam wrap, then band upright to a pallet with two cross straps. Block and brace to prevent tipping; mark center of gravity if tall.
- Museum-grade wood/composite chests ship best in a lined crate (1 in. foam or soft pack) to protect finishes—for example, a police archive or exhibit case en route to a contractor.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 rating streamlines quoting and avoids costly reclass fees when shipping empty firearm or bayonet lockers.
- Non-hazardous designation eliminates hazmat surcharges and opens more carrier options, improving transit speed and lane coverage.
- Consolidate multiple lockers on one pallet to reduce minimum charges—e.g., four mid-size cabinets on a 48x40 with shared dunnage.
- Proper packing (edge protection, banding, crating) cuts hinge and finish damage, lowering claim risk for agencies, ranges, and OEM cabinet makers.
