How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Secure the mount or carriage to a steel or hardwood skid; bolt through base plates and add blocking to stop roll, pitch, and yaw during LTL handling.
- Lock all moving parts (traverse, elevation, pintles) with transport pins or clamps and pad exposed trunnions; cap threads and cover bearings to prevent impact and dust.
- Use a crated enclosure or rigid frame with corner protection for pedestal or tripod mounts that have a high center of gravity; strap with steel or polyester banding in at least two directions.
- Mark paperwork and the crate clearly: “Inert Mount Only – No Firearm, No Ammunition.” List NMFC 146190, Class 100 on the BOL and verify carrier acceptance for ordnance support equipment.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costing: fixed Class 100 removes density disputes and reduces reclass or inspection fees.
- Fewer damages and claims when mounts are bolted to bases and fully braced, cutting downtime for armories or test ranges.
- Faster tendering and pickup by clearly labeling non-hazardous, inert hardware and including the NMFC number on shipping docs.
- Better budgeting for defense contractors and integrators by standardizing pack methods (crated or skidded) across projects and lanes.
