How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use double-wall corrugated boxes with custom foam or cut polyethylene to immobilize each metal mount; add VCI wrap to prevent corrosion during transit.
- Bag and label parts by drawing or NSN and include orientation arrows for sighting alignment so receiving teams can verify without handling sensitive faces.
- Separate fasteners, clamps, or dovetails into inner cartons; block and brace the master box to pass typical 3–4 ft drop scenarios.
- On the BOL, cite NMFC 146450 and declare Class 85 for boxed mounts to avoid reclass fees and ensure consistent LTL rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 provides predictable LTL rates and fewer billing disputes versus density-based items.
- Boxed presentation reduces accessorials tied to loose machinery parts and speeds cross-dock handling.
- Ordnance Group identification supports defense/aerospace buyers while the non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance.
- Protection of precision mating surfaces lowers damage claims, preventing production delays on weapon sights and fire-control systems.
