How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Enter NMFC 146530 with Class 85 in your TMS and select packaging as boxes to prevent reclass charges on steel aiming posts.
- Use double-wall cartons with end-cap cushioning and edge protectors so the steel tips don’t punch through the box during LTL handling.
- Wrap posts with VCI paper or film and add desiccant inside the box to limit corrosion in humid linehaul environments.
- Bundle multiple boxed units on a pallet for safer forklift handling, keep the footprint square, and mark gross weight and “Do Not Clamp.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 removes density disputes, streamlining quotes and accelerating tender acceptance.
- Boxed packaging reduces damage risk and accessorials tied to awkward metal bars, lowering claim frequency.
- Clear item coding (NMFC 146530) supports audit-ready documentation for defense contractors and OEM suppliers.
- Consistent class and packaging improve carrier compatibility and yield more predictable LTL rates across lanes.
