How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use robust boxes or crates and interleave rings with VCI paper or oil-treated wrap to prevent corrosion; avoid loose bands. Example: 50 bands per carton with corrugated dividers.
- Palletize low and tight: add slip sheets, corner boards, and two perpendicular steel or poly straps to stop ring-shift and rolling during cross-dock transfers.
- Clearly mark each package and the BOL with NMFC 146550, Class 60, item description, piece count, and total weight to minimize reweighs or inspection delays.
- Route as non-hazardous ordnance components; if delivering to depots or secure facilities, note limited access and appointment needs to prevent accessorial surprises.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 enables predictable LTL pricing and cleaner benchmarking across carriers and lanes.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and specialized paperwork, speeding tender and pickup approvals.
- Dense iron packaged correctly lowers damage risk, reducing claims and cycle time in defense supply chains.
- Accurate NMFC identification curbs reclass penalties and accessorials, improving landed cost and margins.
