How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as “Racks, firearm” on the BOL and note material (metal or metal/wood) and packaging type (loose or packages) to align with Class 150.
- Unitize when possible: strap racks to a pallet with edge protectors, pad contact points with foam, and wrap with VCI paper for metal surfaces to prevent corrosion.
- For long or wall-mount racks, use a custom skid or double runners, block and brace to control center of gravity, and cap exposed mounting brackets to avoid puncture claims.
- Confirm receiver requirements common to armories, ranges, and retailers—appointments, inside delivery, or limited access—to prevent unexpected accessorials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 for both metal and metal/wood racks reduces reclass risk and stabilizes your LTL quotes.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees, speeding tender and pickup.
- Clear packaging as loose or packaged helps carriers plan handling, minimizing special charges and damage incidents.
- Palletizing multiple racks into one unit cuts touchpoints, lowers claims exposure, and can trim overall handling costs.
