How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package small steel stops in heavy-duty cartons or pails with dividers and VCI liners to prevent scuffing and corrosion; avoid loose metal-on-metal contact.
- Keep individual box weights manageable (around 40–60 lb) and list part numbers and piece counts on each package to speed receiving at defense or automotive facilities.
- Palletize low and tight: distribute weight evenly, add corner boards and a top cap, then stretch-wrap and band. Do not mix SKUs in the same carton.
- Bill as NMFC 146750, Class 65, non-hazardous. Write “Shell Packing Stops, steel, in packages” on the BOL to prevent reclass and inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
