How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify and document inert status (no explosives) with serials and end-use notes; mark containers clearly as “Inert Training Torpedo” to avoid hazmat misrouting.
- Pack in a rigid box or metal container with cradle blocks supporting mid-body and tail; immobilize fins with foam collars and add shock/tilt indicators.
- Secure or lock out the propulsion section; disconnect any onboard batteries and drain residual lubricants or coolants where applicable; cap all exposed ports.
- Book at Class 100 and request secure pickup/delivery windows; share center-of-gravity and lifting points; note applicable ITAR/EAR controls and require chain-of-custody.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value

- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and shortens paperwork cycles.
- Purpose-built containerization cuts damage risk and claim exposure for high-value defense assets.
- Clear export-control notes and custody protocols prevent holds, speeding transit and reducing storage fees.
