How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid, foam-lined boxes sized to the steel frame; isolate the glass faces so they never touch and add corner protection to protect the sealed edges and air/vacuum layer.
- Palletize boxes upright and mark “This Side Up” and “Fragile—Armored Glass”; strap over the steel frame, never across the glass; avoid stacking and add shock/tilt indicators.
- List NMFC 146900, Class 70 on the BOL with piece count; no density entry is required; note non-hazardous status and include part or serial numbers for traceability.
- For deliveries to bases or armored OEMs, schedule appointments and limited-access service; choose carriers experienced with glass and Ordnance Group freight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 provides predictable LTL pricing, simplifying quotes and budgeting for program runs and replacements.
- Correct boxed packaging under NMFC 146900 limits reclass risk, audit delays, and accessorial back charges.
- Securing by the steel frame and using shock indicators reduces damage claims, downtime, and costly reshipments.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving routing and transit reliability.
