How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 147420 and Class 200 on the BOL to prevent reclass, and note that the unit is self-propelled aircraft loading equipment.
- Secure as rolling equipment: chock wheels, block under frame rails, and use four tie-down points (e.g., two axle straps and two frame chains).
- Protect control panels, hydraulic lines, and belt assemblies with covers or shrink-wrap; disconnect batteries and purge or cap any service fluids before pickup.
- Coordinate accessorials: specify loading method (dock, ramp, or forklift), turning radius and height clearance, and request flatbed or step-deck if the unit exceeds dock height.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 200 provides consistent rating and faster quotes across carriers, simplifying budgeting for ground support operations.
- Correct NMFC usage reduces reclass and reweigh fees, cutting surcharges tied to misidentified GSE shipments.
- Proper blocking and protection minimize damage to belts and hydraulics, lowering claim risk and avoiding downtime on the ramp.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and routing, helping meet tight AOG response timelines without hazmat delays.
