How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Secure the drafting chest by latching it, bagging loose instruments, and placing it in a new 275# test corrugated box with corner guards and void fill.
- Palletize multiple cartons with no overhang; use two straps and full stretch wrap. Mark This Side Up for boards and templates to prevent warping.
- List NMFC 147670, Class 85, non-hazardous on the BOL and show the piece count clearly (e.g., 1 chest-in-box per carton) for clean claims handling.
- For sensitive metal compasses and rulers, add molded foam or 2 inches of cushioning around the chest to dampen shock during LTL cross-dock transfers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 yields predictable LTL quotes and reduces reclass fees tied to density disputes.
- Chest-in-box packing limits loss of small instruments and lowers damage claims, protecting project schedules.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and accelerates tendering for defense and training programs.
- Clear NMFC alignment streamlines audits, procurement approvals, and repeat shipments for ROTC and contractor supply chains.
