How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship only the hopper and pumping mechanism; exclude distribution pipes, hoses, and nozzles, which must be classified and billed separately.
- Bolt or band the assembly to a heavy-duty skid, block under the frame to keep forks clear, and brace for the tall center of gravity.
- If an engine is attached, drain fuel and fluids, cap vents and ports, and label as drained; if removed, crate or cradle the engine as a separate piece.
- Cover the hopper throat and outlet with plywood and edge guards, plug hydraulic ports, and shrink-wrap to prevent contamination and leaks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate scope reduces reclass fees by separating hoses and accessories from the pump item.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and speeds carrier acceptance for LTL moves.
- Proper skidding, blocking, and banding cut OS&D risk and avoid handling surcharges.
- Clear item definition enables precise rate shopping and fewer disputes at delivery.
