How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure the unit end-to-end, including trailer tongue, coupler, discharge elbows, and any attached hose reels; confirm overall length exceeds 10 ft and note exact L x W x H on the BOL.
- Drain residual water or slurry, cap intake/discharge ports, and secure loose hoses to the tubular frame; label as non-hazardous and note “drained, no fluids.”
- Block and chock wheels, lock the coupler, and use four-point tie-downs to the tubular frame with edge protectors; add no-stack signage for terminal handling.
- Request quotes with overlength details to avoid surprises; many LTL carriers apply length surcharges, and some lanes may favor flatbed or step-deck options.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Dimensions-based classification simplifies rating and reduces reclass risk since density and weight aren’t used for this item.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and can lower compliance costs for municipal, construction, and wastewater contractors.
- Clear inclusion of units with or without hoses minimizes disputes with carriers and cuts OS&D claims.
- Early disclosure of >10 ft length helps negotiate accessorials up front, improving quote accuracy and protecting margins.
