How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid corrugated boxes with internal foam or dividers to isolate glass sample jars, plastic bottles, meters, and metal probes. Sleeve sharp tools and cap any containers tightly.
- Print the NMFC 148030 and Class 125 on the BOL. Mark packages as “Field Lab Kit—Boxed” to distinguish complete outfits from loose instruments.
- When shipping multiple boxes, unitize on a 48x40 pallet with corner boards and two bands. Limit top load pressure and apply “Do Not Stack” only if necessary.
- Include a detailed packing list and photos before tender. Example: two 25 lb boxes, each 16x12x12, strapped together for easier LTL handling and fewer claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing rating disputes for environmental and agronomy teams.
- Non-hazardous classification avoids hazmat surcharges and documentation, lowering total landed cost and simplifying compliance.
- Boxed packaging aligns with standard LTL processes, minimizing special handling fees and improving terminal throughput.
- Standardized kit packaging across field crews enables consolidation, better FAK negotiations, and more predictable freight budgets.
