Notes

Note 149242: NOTE-Floor maintenance pads are pads which are used to strip, scrub, polish, buff or otherwise clean floors.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm density per handling unit: measure L×W×H in inches (include overhang), convert to cubic feet (L×W×H÷1728), then weight ÷ cubic feet for pcf to determine the 50–400 class.
  2. Package to NMFC Rules 1049, 2441, or 2479: strong cartons, dividers between abrasive faces, edge guards, and inner sleeves for buffing wheels to protect hubs and arbors.
  3. If pads are impregnated with soap or cleaner, line cartons with poly and seal against moisture; keep away from food items and note contents for clarity (still non-hazardous).
  4. Palletize tightly with no overhang; use a cap sheet and full stretch wrap. Mark cartons with NMFC 149240 and the calculated class to prevent reclass or inspection delays.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate density calculation unlocks the lowest valid class, reducing LTL rates and avoiding costly reclass and reweigh fees.
  • Compliance with 1049/2441/2479 packaging minimizes damage to abrasive pads and wheels, cutting claims and improving carrier acceptance.
  • Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and shortens tender-to-pickup timelines for cleaning and polishing products.
  • Smart SKU separation—e.g., ship high-density polishing wheels apart from airy floor pads—can secure better classes and optimize total freight spend.
