Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
149500.00 PAINTS GROUP: Articles consist of Paints, Paint Material or Putty, as described in items subject to this grouping.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use this group as your starting point, then match to a specific paint or putty NMFC item by packaging: 1-gallon cans in trays, 5-gallon pails, or small tubs and cartridges.
  2. On the BOL, be precise: “Paints Group—non-hazardous, water-based, sealed 1-gal cans, 4 per case, 48 cases on 1 pallet.” Include counts, container type, and seal style.
  3. Prevent seepage and scuffing: secure lever-lock or ring-lock pail lids, add can clips, line cartons with poly and absorbent pads, use corner boards, and stretch-wrap with a top sheet.
  4. Plan for temperature sensitivity: request Freeze Protection for latex or water-based paints in winter and avoid high heat for putties; mark pallets “Do Not Freeze” as needed.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Non-hazardous classification widens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, keeping LTL rates competitive.
  • Accurate group-to-item mapping reduces reclasses and inspection delays, lowering unexpected fees and detention risk.
  • Improved packaging practices cut leakage-related claims and OS&D costs, protecting margins and customer satisfaction.
  • Clear, consistent BOL wording speeds up quoting and tender acceptance, improving on-time dispatch and cash flow.
