How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the commodity fits NMFC 150400: pallets, platforms, skids, or shipping racks designed for lift-truck handling, with or without sides, ends, enclosures, or stacking posts.
  2. Calculate density to find the class: measure the overall length × width × height of the unitized bundle (in inches), divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet, then weight ÷ cubic feet. Match to the 150400 density table.
  3. Package for stability: band or strap stacks, add corner boards, and stretch-wrap. Cover or pad any protruding posts or hardware on racks to prevent punctures and reduce carrier exceptions.
  4. Optimize configuration: nest or knock down racks when possible, align pallets to a common footprint (e.g., 48×40), and keep fork openings clear so carriers can handle safely without accessorials.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate density under 150400 avoids reclass fees and invoice disputes, protecting margins on high-volume pallet or rack moves.
  • Smart packaging (nesting racks, tighter stacks) raises PCF and can push shipments into lower classes, directly improving LTL rates.
  • Clear NOI description with lift-truck ready handling reduces damages and accessorial delays, improving on-time pickup and delivery.
  • A single, 13-tier density scale streamlines quoting for mixed materials (wood, steel, plastic) across pallets, skids, and racks.
