Notes

Note 150561: NOTE-Paper, paperboard, fiberboard or pulpboard tendered for shipment on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms must not overhang the skid, pallet or platform deck, and all exposed surfaces and edges must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials so as to withstand the normal rigors of the less-than-truckload environment. Paper, paperboard, fiberboard or pulpboard in rolls must be secured to the lift truck skid, pallet or platform by strapping or other packaging methods to prevent shifting of the load. Paper, paperboard, fiberboard or pulpboard sheets stacked on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms must be secured to the lift truck skid, pallet or platform by strapping in opposing directions, with at least two straps in each direction. All corners and strapping contact points must be protected by packing forms.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the NOI fit: use 150560 for packaged paper, paperboard, fiberboard, or pulpboard not otherwise specifically described, including laminated or coated variants shipped as packages.
  2. Calculate density per NMFC Item 170: measure the full packaged unit (L×W×H in inches), convert to cubic feet, weigh the shipment, then divide lbs by cu ft to select the class within 50–400.
  3. Package to protect edges and resist moisture: stack sheets square, add corner boards, strap tightly, and stretch-wrap with a top sheet; avoid pallet overhang to prevent edge crush and reclass.
  4. Document clearly: mark the BOL with “NMFC 150560, NOI” and the calculated density and class; example—900 lb on 48×40×50 in pallet ≈ 55.6 cu ft, density ≈ 16.2 pcf (higher density, lower class).

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Minimize reclass fees by matching class to actual density, especially for mixed skids of paper grades that vary in weight and cube.
  • Lower freight spend by unitizing tightly and reducing void space, which raises density and can move you to a more favorable class.
  • Faster quoting and tendering: broad NOI coverage allows one rule set for diverse paper-based SKUs without chasing individual item numbers.
  • Fewer claims and delays with moisture and edge protection, improving delivery reliability for printers, converters, and packaging plants.
