How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select sturdy packaging: double-wall boxes for sport rigs; wood crates for cargo or training chutes. Bag the canopy, add desiccant, and coil lines to prevent snags.
- Block and brace inside the crate, fill voids, and use smooth inner liners. Mark “Do Not Crush” and “Keep Dry”; avoid exposed staples or hardware that can catch lines.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Parachutes, NOI — NMFC 154610, Class 150,” and choose the correct packaging type (box or crate). Class is fixed; include weight and dimensions for rating and capacity planning.
- Confirm no pyrotechnic cutters, CO2 cartridges, or other pressurized components travel with the canopy. If present, ship those separately as hazmat to keep this entry non-hazardous.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 eliminates density disputes, cutting reclass and audit fees.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, accelerating tender-to-pickup timelines.
- Purposeful boxing/crating reduces OS&D claims and preserves high-value gear for immediate field use.
- Predictable classification improves quote accuracy and budgeting, letting you optimize packaging for protection rather than densification.
