How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 154920 and Class 50 on the BOL, and specify packaging (e.g., 48 bagged peat briquettes on a 40x48 pallet, stretch-wrapped).
- Keep product dry: line boxes with poly, use pallet top sheets, and avoid exposure to rain or damp docks to prevent swelling and crumbling.
- Control fines and dust: choose sturdy double-wall boxes or sealed bags, add slip sheets, and fully wrap pallets to contain loose particles.
- Stack with care: use corner boards and two straps each direction; double-stack only if top load is evenly distributed and packaging is rigid.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower LTL spend: Class 50 typically delivers better base rates when pallets cube out efficiently.
- Reduced reclass risk: a fixed class and clear NMFC 154920 labeling cut adjustment fees and delays.
- Simplified compliance: non-hazardous solid fuel avoids hazmat paperwork and special surcharges.
- Fewer damage claims: moisture control and rigid packaging minimize breakage, cleanup charges, and OS&D.
