How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State 'alumina/glass proppant pellets, in bags—NMFC 154930, Class 55' on the BOL to prevent reclass and speed tender acceptance.
- Palletize bagged product on 48x40 heat-treated pallets; keep bags flush with the deck, add top caps, corner boards, and stretch wrap.
- For heavier moves, use super sacks on pallets or cradled in a van; block and brace to prevent shift, and avoid stacking beyond bag specs.
- Keep loads dry from yard to dock; use slip sheets or moisture barriers when staging outdoors or shipping from well sites.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 rating improves LTL cost per ton and simplifies forecasting.
- Non-hazardous designation eliminates hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier availability on oilfield lanes.
- Bagged-packaging expectation reduces damage claims from burst bags and minimizes reclass risk.
- Clear NMFC reference (154930) on paperwork accelerates quoting and helps lock in consistent rates.
