How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare the shipment as hazardous on the BOL using the proper shipping name and details from the supplier's SDS, plus a 24-hour emergency contact.
- Use sturdy, sift-proof corrugated boxes with sealed liners to contain fines and odors. Tape seams, add absorbent pads, and keep units upright.
- Palletize tightly and stretch-wrap; add Poison and Keep From Food labels. Separate from edible goods, seed, and feed to avoid cross-contamination.
- Confirm your LTL carrier accepts hazardous materials and this commodity. Arrange attended pickup; do not leave hazmat unattended at docks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 rating streamlines quoting and keeps rates predictable across lanes and carriers.
- Accurate NMFC use reduces reclassifications, hazmat refusals, and accessorial penalties, cutting surprise costs.
- Boxed shipments stack efficiently, improving trailer cube and lowering per-pallet freight spend.
- Clear hazardous designation speeds carrier approval and minimizes terminal delays, protecting delivery timelines.
