How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm packaging matches the rule: goods must ship in boxes, crates, or secure packages. Example: crate a backboard, double-wall box a bowling ball, and bundle skateboards in a master carton.
- Calculate density to set class. Example: a 42 lb carton measuring 24x18x16 in equals 4.0 cu ft and 10.5 pcf—expect a mid-tier density class under Item 170.
- Reduce cube to lower class where possible: deflate air mattresses and water toys, nest helmets or gloves, and break down pool kits to fit tighter boxes.
- Protect long or rigid pieces (skis, boards, batons) with reinforced ends and edge guards. Keep lengths under common overlength thresholds to avoid accessorials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density-driven class helps prevent reclass fees and invoice disputes on mixed athletic SKUs.
- Single NMFC for many sporting items simplifies rating, enabling cleaner quotes when shipping assorted kits and equipment.
- Right packaging (box vs crate) reduces damage on heavy, point-load items like bowling balls or downriggers, lowering claims costs.
- Optimized cube—through deflation, nesting, and tight packouts—improves pcf and can unlock better LTL rates.
