How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the item clearly on the BOL: “Phosphatic Clay or Sand, bagged/drummed, NMFC 155520, Class 50.” No density needed since it’s a fixed class.
- Use moisture-resistant packaging: poly-lined bags or tight-seal drums. Stretch-wrap and top-sheet pallets to keep fines contained and prevent caking.
- Palletize low and tight. These minerals are heavy; stack 40–50 lb bags in interlocking layers, add corner boards, and band to a 4-way pallet.
- Prevent spills and dust during handling. Seal drum bungs, avoid overhang, and label pallets with gross weight and “Mineral—Keep Dry” for warehouse routing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with Class 50 minimizes reclass disputes and unexpected carrier adjustments.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and reduces accessorial risk tied to special handling.
- Bag and drum packaging fit standard LTL networks, enabling consolidation and better freight rates per pound.
- Clear, fixed NMFC identification shortens quote cycles and speeds dock throughput, improving turn times.
