How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack mouthpieces, pipe stems, and holders in sturdy boxes with partitions or foam so tips and tenons don’t rub or bend; bag small hardware separately.
- Mark the BOL with “Pipe Stems or Mouthpieces, NOI – NMFC 155730” and Class 125, and choose boxes as the packaging to align with the fixed rating.
- For acrylic, vulcanite, wood, or metal parts, use non-abrasive wrap and a light moisture barrier for wood/vulcanite to prevent oxidation during transit.
- Palletize cartons square to the deck, cap and strap them, and set a reasonable stack limit; list piece counts per carton for fast receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 means predictable LTL quotes and no density disputes, speeding up pricing and tendering.
- Correct boxing and cushioning cut cosmetic damage on finished mouthpieces, reducing returns and claim expense.
- Clear NMFC labeling minimizes reclass fees and rebills, keeping margins stable on high-mix accessory shipments.
- Cartonized freight moves efficiently through cross-docks, improving consolidation options and linehaul capacity utilization.
