How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the product fits: non‑cellular plastic mats, optionally backed with cork or foam not over 1/8 inch, packed in boxes. Measure backing at the edge to confirm thickness.
- Pack mats flat in rigid corrugated cartons. Interleave with kraft or poly sheets to prevent scuffing and warping; avoid rolling or banding bundles without a box.
- If palletizing, use corner boards and a top sheet so cartons stay flat and stackable. Mark cartons “Do Not Bend” for warehouse handling clarity.
- Quote LTL at fixed Class 77.5—no density calculation needed. Provide piece count and carton dimensions only for space planning and capacity checks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating at Class 77.5 reduces reclass fees and stabilizes freight budgeting for hospitality, retail, and restaurant supply shipments.
- Boxed packaging improves cube efficiency and stackability, helping secure better LTL rates and fewer damages from edge curl or bend.
- Clear material rules (non‑cellular plastic, limited thin backing) minimize disputes with carriers and accelerate claims resolution if issues arise.
- Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies documentation, shortening booking time and improving service reliability.
