How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 155800, Class 70 on the BOL and describe as “Plant Bed Soil Mix, non-expanded base, ≤15% fertilizer, bagged or boxed inner containers.”
- For bag shipments, use 40–50 lb poly-lined bags on pallets; cross-stack, add corner boards, stretch-wrap, and top-sheet to control fines and prevent leaks.
- When using inner containers in boxes, line cartons with plastic, fill firmly but not overpacked, and mark “This Side Up” to limit compaction and sifting.
- Control moisture before weighing; protect from rain to avoid unexpected weight gains, and record accurate gross weight since LTL charges are weight-based.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 provides predictable rating and reduces the risk of costly reclassifications on soil media loads.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier choice and avoids hazmat surcharges while streamlining tendering.
- Bagged or boxed options match retail and landscape supply chains, cutting handling damage and OS&D claims.
- Tight pallets with clean containment minimize spill cleanups and delays, improving dock throughput and freight costs.
