How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the freight as “wire plant supports, one-piece, loop/spiral ends, boxed” on the BOL and apply Class 85; density is not required for rating.
- Shield looped or spiral ends with caps or corrugated pads inside the carton to prevent punctures; band bundles together before boxing to stop shifting.
- Right-size cartons and fill voids with kraft or foam to control movement; avoid overpacking that could crush the loops or deform the wire.
- Palletize boxes with corner boards and a top sheet, then stretch wrap tightly; keep end-loops oriented inward and avoid stacking heavier freight on top.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing with fixed Class 85 reduces reclass fees and shortens quote-to-booking time.
- Boxed presentation minimizes handling risk versus loose wire bundles, lowering claims and accessorials.
- Optimized cube by nesting spiral/loop ends and using snug cartons helps fit more units per pallet.
- Clear non-hazardous classification streamlines routing for greenhouses, nurseries, and hardware distributors.
