How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your product fits NMFC 156200 (plastics in flakes, granules, pellets, powder, or solid mass) and is not instead classified under items 46030 or 46032.
- Use sift-proof, poly-lined corrugated boxes or approved NMFC packages for powders and granules; seal seams, double-bag liners, and tape closures to prevent leakage and fines.
- Palletize boxes tightly with interlocking layers; add corner boards and stretch wrap. Mark the BOL with “Plastic Materials NOI, NMFC 156200, Class 60” for clean rating.
- Account for product traits: flakes and pellets (PP, PE, PET) may settle, while lumps/solid mass can dent cartons—reinforce boxes and keep unit weights within carrier handling limits.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 60 removes density breaks, speeding quotes and reducing reclass risk.
- Lower landed cost: Class 60 is economical for LTL compared with many alternative plastic categories.
- Fewer accessorials: tight, sift-proof boxing and clear NMFC labeling help avoid cleanup charges and inspection delays.
- Simplified procurement: one classification for multiple plastic forms (flakes to solid mass) streamlines SKUs and routing guides.
