Note 156302: NOTE-Also applies when corrugated, crimped, channeled or ribbed, but does not apply when otherwise curved, bent or formed.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm fit: solid, self-supporting plastic sheets or plates (e.g., polycarbonate, acrylic, PVC), not cellular/fluted and not shipped in rolls.
- Match packaging to size: small stacks in boxes or wood crates; larger panels unitized flat on pallets with a top/bottom board to prevent strap damage.
- Protect surfaces and edges: interleave film, foam, or kraft between sheets; add corner and edge guards; use stretch wrap plus two bands per direction to keep bundles flat.
- Document clearly: show “NMFC 156300, rigid plastic sheet/plate, NOI” on the BOL, list the package type (box/crate/pallet), sheet count or bundle count, and mark “Do Not Bend.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoid costly reclasses by distinguishing from fluted/cellular or expanded boards and from rolled goods—this item covers solid, rigid sheets only.
- Item-defined classification rather than density-driven helps stabilize quotes across varying thicknesses and sizes.
- Multiple acceptable pack methods (boxes, crates, pallets) enable right-sizing the packaging for damage control and freight efficiency.
- Reduced claims through best-practice blocking, interleaving, and edge protection keeps panels flat and scratch-free in LTL networks.
