How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as “Film or Sheeting, NOI” under NMFC 156830 on the BOL, and spell out the pack type (boxed rolls, crated sheets, wrapped bundles).
- If using NMFC Packages 2057, 2059, or 2221, print the package number on labels and paperwork so carriers apply the correct handling and avoid reclass.
- For rolls: use core plugs, edge guards, and stretch-wrap; strap rolls to skids and mark orientation to prevent telescoping or crush during LTL cross-dock moves.
- For flat sheets: keep units flat on pallets with corner protection, use slip sheets, and avoid overhang; band perimeter in at least two directions.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Cleaner audits and fewer reclass fees by matching the allowed pack styles (boxes, crates, wrapped bundles/rolls, Packages 2057/2059/2221) to the NMFC listing.
- Lower damage claims from puncture and abrasion when rolls are stabilized and sheets are edge-protected, reducing write-offs and reship costs.
- Broader carrier access and simpler routing because the item is non-hazardous, enabling faster tenders and competitive LTL rates.
- More accurate quotes and dock planning when dimensions and roll/sheet counts are provided, limiting detention and minimizing unexpected cubic minimum charges.
