How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 157238 for solid rubber tires, whether mounted on steel tire bases or unmounted, to quote LTL at a fixed Class 70.
- Palletize tires on edge with chocks, band tightly through the center, and shield steel bases with edge guards to avoid scuffing adjacent freight.
- If shipping mixed sizes, build separate columns per diameter to prevent nesting gaps and keep the load stable for forklifts and AGVs.
- Note “solid tires—mounted/unmounted on steel bases” on the BOL; density doesn’t affect class, so focus on securement and accurate piece counts.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies rating and reduces reclass charges for industrial tire shipments.
- Single item covers mounted or unmounted press-on/cushion tires, streamlining SKU mapping and rate requests.
- Non-hazardous status lowers compliance overhead and broadens carrier options for tight timelines.
- Proper palletized columns and banding minimize OS&D risk, cutting claims costs and delivery delays.
