How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Determine density first: measure the outer length, width, and height of each boxed or crated piece and divide total weight by cubic feet to select the correct class for NMFC 158880.
- Match packaging to fragility: box small plastics (ball cocks, stoppers, repair kits); crate porcelain and enameled items (sinks, toilets, shower receptors) or use NMFC Packages 977, 104, 1383, 2192, or 2193 as applicable.
- Palletize to protect edges and finishes: keep towel bars, pedestals, and pedestals within the pallet footprint, add corner boards, foam, and cross-strapping, and mark Do Not Stack for delicate lavatories or tanks.
- Verify item mapping on subtypes: fittings, dispensers, and toilet bowls may reference related notes (158881–158883); secure loose hardware in polybags and label cartons with NMFC 158880, piece count, and handling cues.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce freight spend by increasing PCF: nest basins, pack valves densely, and right-size cartons to drive lower density-based classes and better LTL rates.
- Cut reclass and inspection fees: correct NMFC usage and approved packaging (boxes/crates/Packages 977, 104, 1383, 2192, 2193) prevents billing adjustments.
- Simplify quoting across bathroom suites: one density-based item covers many fixtures, valves, seats, and repair kits, streamlining rate requests and TMS setup.
- Lower damage and claim costs: crating fragile porcelain and bracing long items (towel bars, pedestals) reduces breakage and costly reshipments.
